Conception can only occur during a six day window, starting five days before ovulation (sperm has a lifespan of 5 days) through to the day of ovulation (the ovum has a lifespan of 24 hours). Using the ovulation calculator below can help you to determine your fertile window so that you know when you may be ovulating.
Other methods of identifying ovulation:
- Ovulation predictor kits will also help identify when you are ovulating, through sensing the luteinising hormone (LH) surge about 24 hours before ovulation – which identifies a short fertile window. The body temperature rises slightly after ovulation, but unless you are recording your basal temperature on an ongoing basis this is too late for timing sex.
- Monitoring cervical secretions can be the best indicator for timing sex, as this changes prior to and during ovulation. After sex, sperm can survive in the cervical secretions for an average of 2-3 days.
- Follicle Tracking – we offer ultrasound scanning and follicle taking to identify ovulation. Then by targeting acupuncture treatment at the relevant times in the cycle we can encourage ovulation and help prepare the uterine lining giving optimum chance for implantation and helping to achieve pregnancy.
