Sperm motility is a critical factor in male fertility. In order to reach the egg, sperm must be able to swim with a healthy forward motion. Decreased sperm motility (also referred to as asthenozoospermia) can be caused by a variety of factors, including abnormal spermatogenesis, sperm maturation issues, transport abnormalities, or a variocele (enlargement of the veins in the scrotum).
Acupuncture may help sperm motility by increasing the blood supply to the testes and also help to lower anxiety and stress.
There has been some debate over recent medical research into the usefulness of Pentoxifylline to improve semen quality.
Progesterone levels are low before ovulation, usually below 10 ng/ml. Progesterone levels rise, usually above 8-10 ng/ml, within 7-10 days after ovulation in the middle of the second half of the cycle (mid-cycle).
Progesterone levels are usually higher when you are pregnant, but cannot be used to test for pregnancy. Even in a non-pregnant patient they can reach 20 ng/ml. After ovulation, progesterone levels should be greater than 10 to 12 ng/ml to have a better chance of a good pregnancy outcome.
Progesterone levels drop when you are not pregnant. The progesterone drop induces the menstrual period. Progesterone levels fluctuate a lot, even on the same day and can even vary by the hour.
The progesterone blood level in a normal pregnancy can be up to 10 times higher than when you are not pregnant.
“Hi Jacqui, we are really grateful for all your help and support over the last few months, you have been very important to us throughout the process. Thanks again, C,and R”
I saw this lovely couple just before they were to start their first IVF attempt. On closer examination, thyroid issues had to be addressed – thyroid levels need to be at 2 for fertility purposes rather than the normal 5. It is vital that levels are checked prior to starting IVF and also checked and monitored once you are pregnant.
I gave acupuncture treatment to go along side the IVF protocol, then once we got a BFP 🙂 (A positive pregnancy!).
I gave monthly acupuncture throughout the pregnancy. The couple now have a beautiful little girl.

Many of my couples ask whether stress will impact on their chances of getting pregnant. Many clients have very stressful careers and long working hours. Trying to juggle work, relationship and treatment can result in depleted energy levels, short tempers, guilt and lots of pressure. Add to this trying for a baby, either naturally over long periods of time or with assisted conception, stress levels can sore off the Richter scale.
The complex balance of the hormonal system can be influenced by psychological and physical stress. Long term stress can raise levels of the stress hormones including cortisol, which can interfere with the reproductive hormones.
At the clinic we use acupuncture, Relaxation and Visualisation techniques and sometimes Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help organise the mind.

When a women is overweight, excess oestrogen is stored in the fat cells. This can cause hormonal imbalance that can interfere with ovulation. It can also lead to a variety of other health issues.
Research has shown that women with a BMI higher than 25 have a problem with ovulation. It is important to remember that by making just small changes, you can greatly improve your chances of becoming pregnant.
